Kenya is located in east Africa on the Indian Ocean and borders Somali, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, and South Sudan.  Apart from arid land and drought, 48% of the land is put to agriculture which is mostly concentrated in the central highlands.  Mount Kenya, north of Nairobi, is the continent’s second highest peak.  The capital of Nairobi was settled in 1899 as a railway depot and today is a business and cultural hub of the region.

”African women in general need to know that it’s OK for them to be the way they are – to see the way they are as a strength, and to be liberated from fear and from silence.

The Book

TITLE: Unbowed
AUTHOR: Wangari Maathai
PUBLISHED: 2007

Wangari Maathai, winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize, was the first east African woman to obtain a PhD and a well-known activist and politician in the country who started the Green Belt Movement in 1977.

This book is her autobiographical memoir, starting from her life as a young girl in British colonial Kenya (until independence in 1963), to the woman and states-person she became.  An inspiration to women and girls in her country and across the world, her musings should be very valuable in a world increasingly in need of care for our environments and for each other.
